- An exceptional quality and extremely RARE early proof--the finest example graded by PCGS. Deep, dark mirrors vividly bring to life the layer of rich aqua-royal blue and violet hues that drape the finely struck details. The icy smooth mirrored fields are especially devoid of any contact marks or hairlines of any marks. Any proof struck before 1858 is very rare, and anything prior to 1840 exceptionally so. The original mintage of an estimated 20 examples was struck using two die pairs, JR-2 (as here) and JR-4. The JR-2 is considered Rarity-7 in Proof. In his encyclopedia on proof coins, Walter Breen enumerates 7 examples, and states, “Known as a great rarity since the Levick sale of Oct. 1864…” The Legendary Floyd Starr Collection (Stack’s October 1992) contained a GEM example, and it was noted there: fewer than 10 are believed to survive. Missing from the Bareford, Hawn, and Garrett Sales.” We also note that the Eliasberg collection did not have a Proof dime from this year. PCGS 1, NGC 1. (The same coin). This coin last sold in auction in August 2011 for $57,500 and the current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $75,000. Based on its many exceptional characteristics--rarity, technical quality, high grade, and overall eye appeal--this coin should see fiece bidding competition when it crosses the block. If you are a specialist in early dimes, pre-1858 proofs, type coins, or are just putting together a box of 20 uber cool and sexy coins, you owe it to yourself to consider this GEM. Cert.
