Now for something a little bit different. There are some dates that are known in to come toned: 80-S, 83-O, 84-O, 86, and the like, the 1890-S is not one of those dates. The present near-GEM has a dual band of rainbow toning across 2/3 of the obverse/ We like the look of this one, which rates an 8 out of 10 on our color scale. On top of that, this is a slightly better date in this grade. The strike is crisp and full, and the luster is radiant! PCGS 144, NGC 59. We anticipate this coin will bring well above published levels. If you are working on a toned Morgan dollar set, this is a date that rarely comes with color like this, so bid accordingly. Cert.
