- A very high end example of this very cool pattern issue- very close to full GEM quality. The fields are deeply reflective with a great deal of flash, unusual for the issue. A dusting of totally original golden-russet, tan, and nickel silver patina grace both sides of this well struck GEM. VERY RARE any finer. In 1896, Charles Barber set out to redesign the cent and the nickel, and came out with this type, a simple, emblematic design: a shield with a superimposed ribbon with LIBERTY, in front of two crossed poles surmounted by a liberty cap and eagle. E PLURIBUS UNUM and stars around, with the date below. The reverse is an olive branch forming a wreath around a large 5 and small CENTS. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. This is a low R-6 pattern, struck in nickel with a plain edge. PCGS 12, NGC 4, CAC 1. These rarely come up for auction, the last one to sell in auction was back in 2013-- an APR that is no longer relevant. In PR65, the ex Bass coin sold for $4,259 in the 2014 ANA auction--nearly four years ago. The market for cool patterns have recently picked up with several new, major collectors entering the market. Cert. Number 34590305 PCGS # 62224
