- 1852 Liberty Double Eagle. MS-62 (NGC). Of this issue, Doug Winter and Adam Crum (An Insider's Guide to Collecting Type I Double Eagles, 2002) state: ""To qualify as a Condition Census example, an 1852 double eagle must be Mint State-62 and be choice for the grade."" This statement remains true despite the subsequent discovery of a small quantity of examples with the S.S. Republic shipwreck, most of which are lightly circulated AUs. The coin we offer here, however, is fully Unc with a vibrant, frosty texture and handsome rose-gold color to both sides. Scattered abrasions are commensurate with the grade, and none are worthy of singular concern. Sharply struck, and very attractive.
Included in this lot is a deluxe S.S. Republic presentation box with a mounting slot for the NGC holder as well as a small information booklet from Odyssey Marine Exploration, salvagers of this important shipwreck. Within the box is also Certificate of Authenticity #5086612-004 (the NGC cert ID# for this coin) over the signatures of Greg Stemm and John Morris, co-founders of Odyssey Marine.
