- 1859 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-244, Pollock-300. Rarity-7+. Copper. Reeded Edge. Proof-64 BN (PCGS). CAC.
Longacre's French Head of Liberty obverse, bust right with oak and cotton wreath in hair, ribbon draped on shoulder reads LIBERTY, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around, date below, reverse from the regular-issue half dollar die of the era. Deep golden tan with lively rose and neon blue iridescence endorsing both sides, especially among the motifs. The eye appeal and aesthetic charm is superb for the assigned grade, certainly finer overall than many of the dipped-out and unnaturally bright copper patterns that exist in today's numismatic marketplace. The only example of Judd-244 certified within the BN category by PCGS; another Proof-64 example has been certified by the firm, that in the RB designation. As noted at the informative uspatterns.com website by its creator: "Your editor, Saul Teichman, has always questioned whether this was designed by Longacre or Paquet as the 1859 half dollar patterns used Paquet's punches in the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. These are probably restrikes. If they are, they were probably struck from the same reverse die used on the 1839 Judd-97 and J-98 and/or the unique Judd-538." The present specimen represents a rare pattern issue with a beautiful obverse design, and is among just a few examples known to today's collecting community.
PCGS# 11986.
PCGS Population: 1; no others within the BN designation.
