- The O-109b is a R-4+ die state, very popular among collectors of early varieties. In 1809, the mint experimented with various edge devices, some coins were struck with III in between the words on the edge, while others have XXX; others still have no ornamentation. While these edges were struck using various die marriages (unlike other major varieties that often were struck from a single set of dies). The III and XXX edges are considered Red Book types and are collected as such. This CHOICE AU is totally original and very pleasing. A bold luster remains in the fields, particularly on the obverse. Sharply struck on both sides with only the slightest hint of high point friction. We very much like the look of this very pretty example. PCGS 31, NGC 11, CAC 9. The last PCGS/CAC coin sold for $2,064 in August 2017 and another one sold in July 2015 for $2,820 and the current PCGS value is listed at $2,800.
