- 1838 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-73, Pollock-77. Rarity-5. Proof-64 (NGC). A draped bust of Liberty faces left on the obverse, with thirteen stars arranged seven left, six right and the date 1838 below. Liberty is wearing a diadem and a ribbon, there also being a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY in her hair. On the reverse, an eagle flies left in a plain field. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is above, and the denomination HALF DOLLAR is below. Struck in silver with a reeded edge and a medallic alignment of the dies. The deeply reflective surfaces are bathed in mottled antique-golden patina through which one can appreciate vivid purple-lilac undertones as the coin turns under a light. There is a bit of light striking detail over the highest points in the centers, as is typical for the type. Free of outwardly noticeable handling marks, with a couple of tiny lintmarks that we mention solely for pedigree purposes. There are heavy reverse die breaks radiating out from the center. According to Andrew W. Pollock, III (1994), examples of Judd-73 that display these heavy die breaks are restrikes coined sometime circa 1858 or later.<br />
