- Classic 1791 Liverpool Halfpenny
1791 Liverpool Halfpenny. Musante GW-19, Baker-17. Copper. Lettered edge. EF-45 (PCGS).
28.2 mm. 138.1 grains. Edge lettered PAYABLE IN ANGLESEY, LONDON OR LIVERPOOL. Glossy deep chocolate brown with some traces of faded olive in the fields and slightly green outlines through the reverse motif. Ancient light hairlines are noted on both sides, but are a bit more aggressive on the reverse. A couple of tiny spots of verdigris are also seen. Struck on a flan far too compact for the dies, as is frequently the case with this issue, though here the date is complete while the letters of WASHINGTON are all partly off the edge. Of the early Washington “coins,” this has long been a favorite and is certainly quite a bit scarcer than many other issues. In the 1890 sale of the R. Coulton Davis Collection, the cataloger pointed out that just four examples were known. That piece brought $26, nearly twice the price realized for a C.C.A.U.S. medal. There are certainly more known today, but this illustrates how prized this piece was at the time Baker obtained it.
Provenance: Ex William Spohn Baker Collection, to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by bequest, November 15, 1897; lost by theft in the 1970s; unknown parties; Jules Steinman; Steve Ivy; New England Rare Coin Auctions, April 1981, lot 17; William Anton, Jr.; Returned to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, August 1987.
