- With a mintage of only 40,000 this Antebellum silver dollar would have been scarce to begin with. As the 1850s progressed the value of silver in our coinage became worth more than the coin's face value, leading to widespread exporting and melting of silver coins for the profit. The 1850-O is considered a key issue in the series, and when encountered in any grade, collectors take note. The presently offered GEM AU has a spectacular look! The surfaces show only the slightest hint of wear. Totally original, the coin possesses a wonderful pinkish-rose hue blends with the soft dove-gray silver color over crisply defined design elements and smooth, problem-free surfaces. There are no discolorations anywhere. A very attractive example of this very scarce Seated Liberty issue, that rarely comes this nice! PCGS 9, NGC 19, CAC 2. Here is a clue into the rarity of this date/grade. Since 2002, only four sales are recorded in our database, representing three different coins. None were CAC, and the most recent brought just shy of $10,000 in September 2013--that is nearly four and a half years ago! Clearly the price guides are going to be useless here! There are only a dozen coins graded finer--only four of which are CAC-approved. A very RARE coin for the specialist collector and we know there will be very strong bidding for this one! Good luck!
