This is a wonderful example of this low mintage Civil War era Proof; 1863 was a pivotal year in the conflict, turning the tide of the war from the Confederate advantage toward that of the Union with major victories at Gettysburg, Vicksburg, and Chattanooga. While at the height of the war, and the economic upheavals that it caused, the mint struck 460 Proofs for collectors, making this one of the lower mintages of the era. The presently offered GEM offers a deep, rich, totally original patina in shades of slate and amber, with accents of teal, and tangerine on the obverse. The reverse is mostly untoned with accents of pale gold. The mirrors have a bold and brilliant flash that is very visually alluring and the surfaces are generally clean and free of any serious distractions Only 460 Proofs were struck. PCGS 10, NGC 11.
