- 1863-S Liberty Seated Dime. Fortin-101, the only known dies. Rarity-7-. MS-63 (PCGS).
Rare and impressive Choice Mint State preservation for this scarce and conditionally challenging issue in the early San Francisco Mint dime series. Otherwise brilliant surfaces reveal tinges of iridescent champagne-gold and powder blue as the surfaces dip into a light. A touch of softness to Liberty's head notwithstanding, this is a well struck coin with most design elements boldly to sharply rendered. Lustrous and smooth in hand, there is much to recommend this coin to the advanced collector of Liberty Seated coinage. There are probably only 15 to 20 survivors grading MS-63 or finer, making the 1863-S an important condition rarity. The presently offered example ranks among the finest we've had the privilege to offer in recent years. The MS-63 coin in our (American Numismatic Rarities') sale of the Frog Run Farm Collection, November 2004, realized $10,350. More recently, another MS-63 coin in our (Bowers and Merena's) Orlando Rarities Sale, January 2009, sold for $9,200, while the PCGS/CAC MS-63 in our August 2015 Chicago ANA Sale brought $11,750.
