- This lovely family heirloom was awarded for Hourigan's participation with other shipmates on the U.S.S. Concord. The original ribbon is intact, and the medal shows some wear. The obverse depicts Commodore George Dewey, and the reverse a sailor artfully rendered. At the lower reverse the name of the ship is engraved, and on the edge is Lieutenant Patrick W. Hourigan is engraved in single block letters.
After the explosion on board the battleship Maine in Manila Bay, a number of ships were sent to the area to put down the insurrection. One of those ships was the U.S.S. Concord, which arrived in April 1898. Admiral Dewey won a decisive victory using a number of United States ships, including the Concord, and those participating in the battle were awarded these medals. It is important to note that Hourigan was an officer in the battle and the resounding victory in Manila Bay established the United States interests and responsibilities in the far east. The Concord had a length of 244 feet, and a complement of 3 six inch guns and one four inch gun.
Estimated Value $50-UP.
