THE SAN DIEGO COLLECTION A gorgeous, borderline GEM example of this really neat, Rarity-3 die marriage. The O-109 shows heavily clashed and cracked dies; the late die state also shows heavy die flow from the centers to the rims, obliterating much of the dentils and drawing the stars and letters to the edge, elongating and distorting them from their original form. The dies clearly came together without a blank planchet between them on multiple occasions and came together with such brute force that both sides imparted their design elements to the other. Looking at the coin with a strong glass, you can count at least three separate clashing events! Outlines of the eagle's wings appear in the fields surrounding Liberty's bust, the scroll and lettering of E PLURIBUS UNUM fills the void below the bust and above the date, and the shield is boldly defined on Liberty's neck. The reverse die had been partially lapped to remove clashing, but not lapped to the point of creating the O-109a die state, erasing one of the leaves. The surfaces display a bold and brilliant satiny luster under a rich layer of slate-gray, baby blue, soft lilac, light rose, clear gold, and antique pewter patina. The devices, despite the advanced state of the dies, show bold central definition. Devoid of contact, the eye appeal is exceptional on this VERY CHOICE, near-GEM quality Bust half dollar.
