1876 Trade Dollar. Type II/II. AU-53 (PCGS). This variety has proven to be quite rare, as it combines the Type 2 style obverse hub with the Type 2 style reverse hub. The notable change is the points on the ribbon inscribed LIBERTY point down on the Type 2 hub, but point to the left on the style 1 hub. For the reverse there is no berry below the right claw of the eagle from the branch where the eagle is perched. Handsome lilac-gray throughout with a blend of russet iridescent accents on the obverse, deeper gray accents on the reverse. Minimal signs of handling when closely examined and a pleasing collector coin that has proven to be quite difficult to find at all of this new hub combination. As more and more collectors specialize in each series, such nuances will be in ever increasing demand. Held in a museum collection for generations and only recently discovered.
