We had the honor of selling this HIGH END GEM 1879 quarter eagle in Regency Auction 27, lot 439, as part of the Chester Roche Collection. There it was described as: "An AMAZING GEM with a rich glowing mint vibrance. Sharply struck with smooth, problem free surfaces. Pleasing yellow gold surfaces on both sides show some richer tone on the reverse. High end and original, this coin is housed in an OGH." Today, we have nothing to add, just to say that no CAC-approved MS65 has sold in the four years since its prior appearance! PCGS 21, NGC 13, CAC 7. This GEM sold for $4,818, well above current published levels. Prior to that, the last PCGS/CAC coin sold in September 2013. We can honestly say that only two appearances in nearly a decade speaks volumes for the rarity of QUALITY Gem specimens of this date. Only a dozen have graded finer. A great coin for any type or date set of quarter eagles, and one that will certainly delight any collector. Cert. Number 2546846 PCGS # 7830
