- Choice Mint State Rhode Island Ship Medal Brass, Wreath Removed Undated (Circa 1780) Rhode Island Ship Medal. Betts-562, W-1730. Without Wreath Below Ship. Brass. MS-63 (PCGS). CAC. A notably hard and glossy golden-olive specimen with exceptional eye appeal and grand physical quality. The surfaces are immaculate and stand up admirably to magnified scrutiny, with the only marks visible some minor pecks that were in the planchet when produced. Among Rhode Island Ship Medals seen by the present writer (FVV) -- and that's a large number during 26 years of cataloging in Wolfeboro, NH -- the present beauty ranks high among them for quality and physical boldness; indeed, the outstanding quality is the first thing that jumps out at a viewer, and it just gets better from there! The present medal is easily the equivalent, hands down, of lot 1049 in our June 2012 Baltimore auction, a brassy golden MS-63 PCGS/CAC piece that realized a hammerprice of $10,000. We suspect the present piece should readily meet -- and top -- that realized price. Choice for the grade with emphasis on Choice! PCGS# 588.
