- 1797 Draped Bust Half Dime. LM-2. Rarity-4. 16 Stars. EF-45 (PCGS).
A lovely example for the grade, this piece offers deep blue-gray toning with distinctive antique-golden highlights. Aside from some mint-made die clashing on the obverse, the surfaces are remarkably distraction free for a circulated early half dime. The strike is also exceptional by the standards of the early United States Mint, and this piece is sure to have no difficulty finding its way into a high grade circulated type set.
It is interesting to note when studying this coin that the obverse die was likely leftover from 1796, as the last 7 is considerably larger than the first 7 in the date, and unless that digit punch just happened to break when this die was being made, it seems logical that the final digit was impressed at a later time when the die was needed. The Draped Bust, Small Eagle type coin has always been one of the most difficult type issues to obtain wholesome. Most of those that do survive show evidence of a hard life, scratches, dents and even bends are common on these small silver coins, and few exist as pleasing as the present example.
