- Circa 1795 Liberty and Security. Musante GW-45, Baker-30. Copper. Lettered edge, AN ASYLUM FOR THE OPPRESSED OF ALL NATIONS. AU-53 (PCGS).
33.5 mm. 300.3 grains. Attractive light olive brown surfaces with gentle striations in the obverse patina visible under close inspection. Traces of pale blue are noted on the reverse. Lightly circulated but without any serious marks, and nicely struck.
Baker noted that these pieces come without the final S in the edge device, at NATIONS. Normally the S is well-pronounced, with three ornaments to follow, separating the beginning and end of the edge device. On this piece, the S is only detected by a portion of the upper curve, but even if it were full, it would have been about 50% obscured by overlap of the first ornament. As this was Baker’s own, it is almost certainly the specimen that inspired his mention of a variant without the final S.
Provenance: Ex William Spohn Baker Collection, to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by bequest, November 15, 1897.
