- 1783 John Chalmers Shilling. W-1785. Short Worm. EF-45 (PCGS). CAC. A truly enchanting example of this popular scarcity issued by John Chalmers of Annapolis, Maryland and struck from dies by Thomas Sparrow of Annapolis, whose work also adorns currency issues of the era. Deep steel-gray surfaces are only lightly worn and are absolutely free of any niggling marks that might engage the viewer's eye. Though low magnification reveals a few tiny marks, none of them are sufficiently bold to warrant our discussion here. Raised reverse die line downward from the lower serif of the S in SHILLING across the beaded circle, the worm, and the hedgerow before terminating at the top of the leftmost bird. Absolutely choice for the grade and type combination, and a coin that would add greatly to just about any cabinet of early American issues currently being formed.
