- An ELUSIVE Gem with luster dancing off the surfaces when the coin is twirled in the light. Adding to the aesthetics is a lovely array of colors graduating from the edge in fiery orange hues to mint green, arctic blue and raspberry hues centrally. The design elements are struck to full advantage with the hair and beard strands nicely delineated. Under magnification with a strong loupe a couple of ticks can be see near the word ONE on the reverse.
Second only to the dollar in terms of rarity among the 1883 issues. The 1883 Hawaiian Dime was coined at the Philadelphia Mint, giving it close connections to the United States. The Hawaiian dime matched United States dimes of the period in terms of size and purity. Interestingly, the denomination appears twice on the reverse of the coin. Once in English as "one dime" and then again as "Umi Keneta", which is the Hawaiian translation.
PCGS 12, NGC 8, CAC 11. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $10,000. The most recent sale of a PCGS graded example occurred in March 2022 where it fetched $8,400 for a CAC stickered piece. A non-CAC specimen sold in 2018 for $8,100. Just 4 coins grade finer at PCGS, 2 MS66+ and 2 MS67. An important opportunity for the specialist to obtain a show stopping beauty for their collection.
