- 1817 Matron Head Cent. N-16. Rarity-1. 15 Stars. MS-61 BN (PCGS).
This is an especially handsome 1817 cent, a coin selected by Dave Bowers for its outstanding eye appeal. Similar to other examples of this variety, the strike is trivially off center with scant denticulation along the upper left obverse and upper right reverse borders, but all devices are boldly to sharply rendered.
This particular piece can be favorably compared with others graded a notch or two higher and was bought by paying "MS-63 money" for it when Dave saw it in Steve Ellsworth's display at a New England Numismatic Association convention in New Hampshire Although this is a plentiful die marriage in an absolute sense, Mint State survivors are elusive. Additionally, Newcomb-16 enjoys strong collector demand at all levels of preservation as it is the only 15 Stars variety of the 1817 Matron Head cent. The two other famous "error stars" coins are the easily available 1828 12 stars half cent and the exceedingly rare 1832 12 stars half eagle. An important opportunity for anyone seeking a very special example of this famous variety.
PCGS# 1597. NGC ID: 2252.
