- 1788 Massachusetts Cent. Ryder 3-A, W-6210. Rarity-4-. Period after MASSACHUSETTS. AU-58+ (PCGS).
147.5 grains. Ruddy brown and very choice for the variety, which often comes with clearly visible as-made surface texture in the planchet. Here we see only a hint of that planchet texture, chiefly at the rims and most obvious around WEA on the obverse, where there is actually a small planchet striation that blends into the rim of the coin. The bold strike, good centering and ruddy brown luster are ideal for a Massachusetts copper, and there are actually very subtle hints of golden iridescence around the date and in the vertical shield lines where the original mint color was last to fade. Here is a superior Massachusetts cent that will readily please both type or variety collector.
Provenance: From the Michael Demling Collection of Massachusetts Cents. Earlier ex Old New England Collection, Heritage, April 2014, lot 3697; Tony Terranova.
PCGS# 948. NGC ID: 2B27.
