1788 Vermont Copper. RR-16, Bressett 15-S, W-2120. Rarity-1. Bust Right. AU-50.
131.2 grains. Deep golden-tan surfaces appear hard and glossy to the naked eye, with no real reason to think otherwise under low magnification. Perfectly centered on both sides, obverse with far sharper details than is typical for the variety, including the hair ribbons and the series of tiny dots on the breastplate, the wreath details, and shoulder details that outline the mail, tiny rim clip at 5 o'clock, central roughness where the metal from the planchet refused to flow into the high relief die elements, no marks of any other measure are seen, reverse shows the rim clip near 1 o'clock, rim tight to bottoms of date numerals, devices sharp where struck, scattered ticks at the center much the same as the obverse, there in the planchet when struck, no other marks present of any nature. This specimen far exceeds the sharpness of the Carlotto plate coin, and is probably a candidate for Condition Censushonors for the variety. An absolutely choice "gem" within the given grade, and a coin that is about as fine as ever found for any Vermont copper variety.
PCGS# 563.
Provenance: From the Dan Freidus Collection. Earlier from our (Stack's) sale of the John M Foreman, Sr. Collection, May 1989, lot 1236. Paper envelope with attribution notes included.
