- Totally original and very lustrous, this is a lovely, borderline SUPERB GEM Washington-Carver half dollar. Hints of iridescent, mottled toning can be seen when the surfaces are rotated in a light. The striking definition is bold and the conjoined busts of George Washington Carver and Booker T. Washington are crisply defined. Struck during the early Cold War era, at the height of Senator Joe McCarthy's hunt for communists in the United States, the Washington Carver half dollar was created in an effort to keep communism from spreading into the African-American community. This effort can clearly be seen in the reverse motto: AMERICANISM **FREEDOM AND OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL**. While the mintage was over 2 million pieces, there was no special care taken when these were sold and SUPERB grade coins are quite RARE. PCGS 457, NGC 350, CAC 131. PCGS has graded 59 in MS66+. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $475, but it would not surprise us if this beauty sold for more. Only 40 examples have graded MS67 or finer, inclusive of duplicates. We think this coin offers a great look at a great price point. Cert. Number 40318358 PCGS # 9434
