FROM THE BEAR CREEK COLLECTION The 59-S dollar represents the first silver dollar issue produced at the San Francisco mint, and is a lower mintage issue of just 20,000. The primary reason for striking this issue was for foreign trade, notably in Asia. When in an attempt to rebalance the gold to silver ratio in domestic circulation in 1853, the half dime through half dollar had their weights reduced, making the dollar the only silver coin of the realm that would be accepted in international trade, particularly in China. The entirety of the mintage of 1859-S dollars was exported, and they circulated widely. Most known examples are in VF grade or so. Traces of mint luster remain in the lightly worn fields, clinging mostly in the protected areas of the devices. The details are sharply impressed on the planchet showing just a trace of friction on the highest points. We note scattered ticks associated with a brief stay in commerce, after transversing the Pacific Ocean at least twice. This is an issue that does not come nice, as evidenced by the lack of CAC approval; between PCGS and NGC, 125 coins have been graded in AU50-AU58 and exactly TWO have received CAC approval! PCGS 16, NGC 13. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $4,400 and the most recent sold in October 2019 for $3,600 and prior to that, one sold for $4,095 in September 2015. A neat collector grade example, worthy of a cool collection of Seated dollars. Cert. Number 5782922 PCGS # 6948.00
