1848 Braided Hair Half Cent. First Restrike. B-2. Rarity-5. Small Berries. Proof-63 BN (PCGS). Distinctive deep olive surfaces with attractive rose, blue and green overtones. Nice reflectivity in the fields and satiny on Liberty's cheek. The high points of the cental motifs seem to exhibit striated natural planchet texture from having not been fully struck up. Though it is typically considered that proofs are always pristine in terms of strike as a default, this is not as reliable on early dates and coppers of this period like the 1849 cents come to mind as less well made than earlier and later dates. All genuine <em>struck</em>&nbsp; half cents of this period are very scarce and desirable. PCGS estimates that 25-30 examples exist.
