- 1883 Morgan Silver Dollar. Proof-67 (PCGS). CAC. OGH--First Generation. Writing in the highly regarded book <em>The Morgan and Peace Dollar Textbook</em>, noted silver dollar expert Wayne Miller has this to say about the proof 1883 Morgan:<br /> <br /> The 1883 is relatively plentiful in choice proof condition, but gem proofs of this date are seldom encountered. Many pieces are very darkly toned. Hairlines are very common. The 1883 proof does not usually exhibit the deep cameo contrast of the three previous issues, although some contrast is usually evident. The author has never seen a superb gem proof of this date; some deeply toned proofs may have been gems but hairlines are very difficult to detect on such pieces.<br /> <br /> Miller almost certainly had not handled the present specimen when he wrote those comments, as none of them do justice to this coin except the statement that reads, "The 1883 proof does not usually exhibit the deep cameo contrast of the previous three issues..." Indeed, this piece is not a cameo proof, although there the applicability of Miller's comments to this coin abruptly end.<br /> An originally and beautifully toned specimen that is fully Superb in all regards, both sides are drenched in lovely, well blended colors of charcoal-rose, deep-blue, and copper-rose shades. The toning is not the dark toning to which Miller refers but, rather, the colors are iridescent in quality and vibrant enough to allow ready appreciation of the shimmering mint reflectivity that characterizes the finish. The toning also allows careful examination of the surfaces, which examination confirms the lack of detracting hairlines and, by extension, the validity of the Superb Gem grade assigned by PCGS.
