- Very Choice 1858 $3 Gold 1858 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. AU-58 (PCGS). CAC. OGH. A handsome orange-gold example with boldly struck devices and appreciable original satin luster. The rarest Philadelphia Mint three-dollar gold piece from the 1850s, the 1858 has a paltry mintage of 2,133 circulation strikes, and unlike some other three-dollar gold issues, this one saw heavy circulation. Few pieces were set aside and as a result, Mint State pieces are rare today. This example with lovely surfaces has been approved by CAC and with the PCGS old-green holder combination, collectors are bound to give it the proper attention it deserves.
