- 1886 Liberty Head Half Eagle. JD-1, the only known dies. Rarity-6-. Proof-58 (PCGS). CAC. One of a mere 72 pieces originally struck for collectors, and of which fewer than half that amount are believed extant today. Unfortunately, this one entered circulation long ago and exhibits obvious wear over the still partially reflective surfaces. Some small abrasions have accumulated as did some green-gold and copper patina. The sharpness of strike and a high wire edge are still present attesting to this coin's Proof lineage. An important opportunity for the gold specialist. Today, only five Proofs in all grades have been certified by PCGS. Population: 1; 4 are finer (Proof-66 finest) PCGS# 8481. NGC ID: 28CP.
