- Elusive Gem Mint State 1864 Quarter
1864 Liberty Seated Quarter. Briggs 1-A. MS-66+ (PCGS). CAC.
An enchanting example of this challenging Civil War era issue. Blushes of cobalt blue, champagne-apricot and salmon-pink iridescence enliven a base of antique silver-gray, the most vivid colors adorning the peripheries. Surfaces are smooth and satiny with a razor sharp strike throughout.
Silver coinage was withdrawn from circulation in the East and Midwest early in the Civil War, and the Philadelphia Mint produced few quarters for commercial use in 1864. In fact, sufficient bullion reached the Mint that year for a delivery of just 93,600 pieces. While some of these coins were exported at the time, others were hoarded and then released into circulation after April 20, 1876, when silver and paper currency achieved parity. Both scenarios conspired against the survival of high quality examples such as this PCGS/CAC MS-66+, which ranks among the finest obtainable in today's market.
