- 1853-FD Octagonal 50 Cents. BG-302. Rarity-4-. Liberty Head, Small Eagle or "Peacock" Reverse. MS-64 (PCGS).
Here is a very attractive, Choice quality example of this perennially popular type. Both sides combine reflective fields with more satiny design elements, the strike impressively sharp throughout. Even and vivid rose-orange color adds to the appeal. Featuring the famous "Peacock" reverse, this Frontier, Deviercy & Co. variety is one of the most popular in the California small denomination gold series. Since at least three examples were discovered with the wreck of the S.S. Winfield Scott, lost at sea in December 1853, and most survivors are circulated to one degree or another, we can conclude that this type was actually intended for commercial use. As such, Mint State survivors are understandably scarce and eagerly sought by advanced collectors. At the threshold of Gem Uncirculated quality, the Oregon Collection specimen offered here is rare from a condition standpoint and sure to see eager bidding among specialists.
Provenance: From the Oregon Collection.
