- One of the FINEST KNOWN examples of the popular 20th century overdate. Scarce in all grades and a dramatic rarity in GEM and finer grades; this one is tops both in respect to both its aesthetic and technical quality. The 1942/1-D is scarcer overall than its Philadelphia mint counterpart, and the under digit is not as bold either. That is likely the reason why the Philadelphia mint overdate was discovered in 1943, while the 42/1-D was not discovered until the early 1960s! However, by some miracle, there are a small number of GEM survivors for collectors to bid on, fewer still in this ultra lofty grade. GEMs are ALWAYS in demand--especially when CAC approved! While There is a PCGS MS67 FB and two NGC MS67 FB graded finer, none of them are CAC approved, making this TOP POP at CAC. Both sides are intensely lustrous with a bold, frosty-satiny radiance. The surfaces are totally free of any single mark or tick of any kind. Aside from the faintest blush of pearly iridescence this borderline SUPERB GEM would fit into a set of all white untoned coins and has an amazing look! PCGS 17, NGC 4, CAC 7. There are four graded MS66+ FB and we sold the most recent example that sold for $73,438 in May 2019 and prior to that, one sold in the 2019 FUN auction for $72,000. The current PCGS value is $75,000 and it jumps to $120,000 for the single MS67 FB that has yet to sell in auction. Good luck. Cert. Number 38529740 PCGS # 5041.00
