Just One Finer at NGC
1832 Capped Head Left Quarter Eagle. BD-1, the only known dies. Rarity-4. MS-63 (NGC).
The offering of an 1832 quarter eagle, a classic rarity, is always a special occasion. This lovely Choice Mint State piece elevates this excitement as one of the very finest known survivors. It is remarkably well preserved for this challenging early gold type. The features pale ivory-gold color with hints of warmer honey-gold at the borders. Intensely lustrous with prooflike reflectivity in the fields. A few wispy lines are noted in the left obverse field, but the surfaces are otherwise untroubled. Sharply struck with original patina in the denticles, it is one of the nicest 1832 quarter eagles that our firm has ever handled. It is the very finest example to appear at auction in almost 15 years and has been held as part of the Zito Collection since 1996. Only one has been graded higher by NGC.
The reduced diameter quarter eagles of 1829 through 1834 make for an elusive type coin in any grade. Mintages range from a low of 3,403 pieces for the 1829 to a high of 4,450 pieces for the 1830, with an average mintage for the six dates of under 3,500 pieces. Factor in attrition over 185 or so years and the number of surviving specimens of any date in the design type becomes tiny. All of the dates, 1829 through 1834, are represented by just one die pairing, BD-1. For the 1832 offered here it is thought that as few as 80 to 100 coins can be accounted for today in all grades. Decades can pass between offerings of a Choice Mint State example, and we expect eager bidders will queue up for this opportunity.
