- 1872 Liberty Seated Dime. Fortin-106. Rarity-4. Repunched Date. MS-65+ (PCGS). CAC.
This dreamy Gem is dressed in rich, mottled cabinet toning that speaks volumes about the coin's originality. Sharply struck in most areas with a full endowment of soft, billowy mint luster. Despite an unusually generous mintage for a Reconstruction circulation strike dime of 2,395,500 pieces, the 1872 is scarce in lower Uncirculated grades and rare any finer than MS-64. This is one of the finest seen by both PCGS and CAC, and the Fortin-106 attribution is of further significance. A loupe readily reveals bold repunching to all but the third digit in the date. Of the seven examples attributed as such by PCGS, this is the only one in Mint State.
Provenance: From the Collection of James Allaire Millholland, 1842-1911.
PCGS Population (issue as a whole): 1; 5 finer (MS-67+ finest).
CAC Population: 4; 3. The former total includes coins certified both MS-65 and MS-65+.
PCGS Population (Fortin-106 attribution only): just 1 in all Mint State grades.
