This PQ GEM 1898 half eagle ranks among the five FINEST graded by PCGS, with just a single MS67 finer. Everything about this coin is exemplary and very high end! A bold, flashy, semi-reflective brilliance booms all over this sharply struck example. The surfaces are adorned with a rich tangerine-golden patina that comes to life with the nearly-Prooflike luster. The fields and devices are clean and free of distracting marks of any kind. The eye appeal is AMAZING. PCGS 4, NGC 5, CAC 1. This coin sold for $13,200 in the 2022 ANA auction, in excess of the published price guides. Just a single non-CAC example is graded higher a PCGS MS67 which realized $18,800 in our May 2018 Regency Auction--that was a long time ago! This one is a real prize for the specialized collector.
