- MEXICO. Cob 8 Reales, 1639/8-Mo P. Mexico City Mint, Assayer P. Philip IV. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, VF Details.
KM-45; Cal-1327. Weight: 26.72 gms. One of only two certified examples of the date on either the NGC or PCGS census. This crudely made survivor exhibits an uneven strike, due to flan irregularities, with a bold mints mark, Assayer's letter with a partial shield. There is a four-digit date, but the tops of the numerals are off the flan. About half of the central design features are present on the reverse with a decent lion and castle in the lower half. Close inspection reveals evidence of slight surface porosity from saltwater immersion, but is hardly distracting. Despite its shortcomings a charmingly crude example with mottled light gray coloration and richer slate patina in the protected areas.
Estimate: $400 - $600.
Provenance: From the Pat Johnson Collection.
Purchased privately from Richard Ponterio (3/1990).
Ex: Concepcion
