The First Dahlonega Quarter Eagle Issued
1839-D Classic Quarter Eagle. MS-62 (PCGS).
Exceptional quality for the collector and one of the finest examples to survive from a the original mintage of 13,674 pieces. Considering that these were the first quarter eagles issued by the Dahlonega Mint adds considerably to their allure. The planchet is a pleasing orange-gold hue with semi-reflective fields and a generally sharp strike on the devices. Highly appealing for the clean surfaces, as these early quarter eagles are seldom found so well preserved. Free of all but minor signs of handling, with the luster intact and all the factors an advanced specialist could hope to find in such a prized rarity.
Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
Collecting quarter eagles of the Dahlonega Mint has been a popular pursuit for a long time. Ditto for the related Charlotte Mint coins. There are no impossible rarities, but a number of dates are especially hard to find. When it comes to Mint State, as here, rarity is the order of the day. The present piece not only is in remarkably high grade but has the status, as noted, of being the first quarter eagle produced by the Dahlonega Mint, then in only its second year of operation.
PCGS# 7700.
