- FRANCE. Return of Napoleon's Body to France Silver Medal, 1840. PCGS SP-63 Gold Shield. 63 mm. Bramsen-1980. By J. Depaulis. Side view of Napoleon Bonaparte's head, in death crowned with laurels, resting on a pillow; Reverse: Steamship La Belle Poule carrying the casket of Napoleon on its deck passing through the bridge at Rouen in 1840. Napoleon died and was buried in exile on the remote South Atlantic island of Saint Helena in 1821, but it was his desire to be interred in France, among Frenchmen, on the banks of the Seine. This took nearly 20 years of negotiation, but through the cooperation of the British and French governments, this was finally accomplished in 1840. Reflective silver planchet, with mottled shades of multi-color iridescence encompassing both sides. Estimate: $300 - $500.
