- Gem Cameo Proof 1867 Gold Dollar Just 50 Pieces Struck Sole Cameo Proof of Date Certified by PCGS 1867 Gold Dollar. Proof-65 Cameo (PCGS). An impressive Cameo Proof of the date with stark definition between the heavily frosted devices and deeply mirrored fields; the deep golden-orange surfaces are an absolute delight to behold. The peripheries enjoy the crinkly orange-peel effect so cherished by today's collectors, and no marks of consequence are noted, even when examined under low magnification. One of just 50 Proofs of the date struck in Philadelphia, with today's conventional wisdom suggesting perhaps just halfthat number or a bit more can be accounted for today. For comparison purposes, the Proof example of the date we (Bowers and Merena) sold as part of the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection (May 2000:44) was a "mere" Proof-64 example certified by PCGS. Comparisons aside, the present Gem Cameo Proof is fine enough to stand on its own, and we suspect it will become a focal point of an advanced gold dollar cabinet. PCGS# 87617.
