- Amazing Near-Mint Alfred the Great Penny
GREAT BRITAIN. Anglo-Saxon. Kings of Wessex. Penny, ND (ca. 880). London Mint. Alfred the Great. PCGS AU-58.
S-1061; N-644. London Monogram (BMC vi) type. Obverse: ÆLFR-ED REX, diademed and mantled bust right; nine dots above; Reverse: Monogram: LONDINIA; cross above, pelleted cross to left, pyramid of dots below. One of the classic English medieval RARITIES, this incredibly enticing specimen presents an exemplary portrait of the king, with excellent detail and remaining in a breathtaking state of preservation. The strike is even and well-centered, and the flan stands as completely free from issue outside of a rather inconsequential mark just above the "L" in the reverse monogram.
Alfred has the distinction of standing out amongst the many numerous Anglo-Saxon kings with his defeat of the Viking’s Great Heathen Army in 878 at the Battle of Edington. Alfred instituted many lasting reforms, including creating the Danelaw in the North of England by which Danish tribes took precedence over Anglo-Saxon ones. Alfred believed strongly in education and had a reputation as a fair and kind ruler. How much of Alfred’s life is myth at this point is impossible to establish, but it is indisputable the impact he had on the subsequently course of the British Isles, still being renowned as one of the best English kings.
