1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 48-g, W-5275. Rarity-1. Outlined Shield. VF-35 (PCGS). Medium rose-tan with solid eye appeal and strong physical character for the assigned grade. No marks of any magnitude are picked up by the unaided eye, though low magnification reveals some uniformly small fissures throughout. Slightly off-center to the viewer's right on both sides, but the rim does not touch or intersect any letters. Usual reverse crack diagonally across shield. The obverse die of this plentiful variety is attributed to James Atlee in Rahway, New Jersey (now the location of a maximum-security prison), the reverse to Thomas Goadsby. Choice for the grade and ideally suited to a mid-range collection of New Jersey coppers.
