- 1876-S Trade Dollar. Type I/I. MS-63+ (PCGS). CAC. This softly frosted, boldly struck example exhibits particularly sharp definition throughout the eagle's plumage on the reverse. Both sides are evenly toned in dominant silver-gray patina with warm golden undertones. The San Francisco Mint really got behind this new Trade dollar design, issuing the most coins of all three mints each year they were produced for circulation from 1873 through 1878. Most were exported to China as intended where they circulated widely, although some stayed in the United States like the present coin where it was carefully preserved. Of further note, this was struck in the Centennial year of our nation, and this fact adds to the historic appeal of this short lived design.
