- JR-4. A beautiful near-GEM quality example of this early date Capped Bust dime. Remarkable, and totally original toning adorns both sides, with a frame of steely-azure-teal that fades into an apricot-amber-gold that graces the centers. Well struck from clashed dies, and the reverse die was in an advanced, shattered state with multiple visually curious cracks and breaks throughout. A very impressive 1814 dime, these are extremely rare any finer than the currently offered MS64, especially when CAC-approval is taken into account. This example is housed in an ancient NGC "fatty" holder and appears to be fresh to the market. Its classic, old time collection eye appeal at once makes it very familiar. Struck during the height of the War of 1812, the historic date 1814 saw the British capture and burn many parts of Washington D.C., including the President's Mansion. However, by the end of the year, British and American diplomats agreed to the Treaty of Ghent, which formally ended the conflict. PCGS 28, NGC 33, CAC 6. No NGC/CAC piece has ever sold in auction, but we sold one in May 2017 for $4,935 and prior to that, examples sold in the $5,500 to $8,500 range. The current Collectors Universe value is $4,500 and the CAC CPG value is listed at $4,690. This high end, totally original, and very beautiful example will fit into any great set of Capped Bust type or a set of early dimes. Cert. Number 207062-002 PCGS # 4488
