- PCGS has misattributed this near GEM Lesher dollar. It is really a Type 2, HK-789 (PCGS # 19002). The difference is the absence of scrollwork to the sides of the fasces on the Type 2. This is a gorgeous, high end example, tied for FINEST graded. Moderately Prooflike luster blooms all over on both sides of this impressive beauty. Light blue and rich rose hues are draped on both sides. Sharply struck up, this example has a great look. Joseph Lesher was a Colorado pioneer and owner of a silver mine. He struck these tokens, which each contained a full ounce of silver, with a face value of $1.25, which could be redeemed at various merchants in the area. Bumstead, who was a Grocer in Lesher's hometown of Victor, CO was his largest customer, and thus many Lesher dollars are from this issuer. Running afoul of federal authorities, soon after he began striking these "souvenirs", the Secret Service put an end to the issue. Between the two Bumstead types, PCGS has graded five and NONE FINER, CAC has approved 2. Again, this coin is misattributed by PCGS, which is why we include info on both types combined. This piece sold for $6,463 in the 2017 FUN auction. No Type 1 has ever sold in auction, making this the FINEST available. We love the look of it, and its historic place in numismatics makes it a very interesting private issue, popularly collected by specialists in Territorial pieces. Good luck! Cert.
