Legend Rare Coin Auctions is honored to offer this EXCESSIVELY RARE 1885 gold dollar die trial struck in aluminum. It is a RARITY-8, struck from the regular Proof dies. This is a once in a generation offering, a very rare pattern that was even missing from the extensive Bob R. Simpson Collection. The mint began striking sets of "die trials" in aluminum for VIPs in 1868 in very limited numbers; these were struck on and off through 1885. This coin has a fantastic CAMEO contrast, though not noted on the generation 1.2 PCGS rattler holder. The fields are flashy and deeply mirrored with a bold reflection. The devices are sharply struck and thickly frosted, contrasting nicely against the surrounding fields. A strong glass reveals no flaws or discolorations of any kind. Just two examples are known. The present coin is ex King Farouk Collection; Palace Collection, Sotheby's February/March 1954, lot 2014; Abe Kossoff's 1966 ANA Auction, August 1966, lot 1239 (as a complete set of die trials of 1885 gold coins in aluminum; Bowers & Merena's King of Siam Sale, October 1987, lot 2255 (offered provisionally as part of the complete set); Superior's Session of Auction '88, lot 293 (as the complete set); Superior's sale of the Jascha Heifetz Collection, October 1989, lot 3367; purchased privately by our consignor's father in 1990, and off the market ever since. The other coin last sold as lot 3641 in Stack's 1976 ANA Auction, and has not appeared since, nor is there a record of it even being certified at PCGS or NGC. PCGS 1, NGC 0, CAC 1. PCGS does not list a value in the Price Guide for this rarity. In the 10th edition of the Judd reference, the PR65 grade is listed at $25,000. Since this coin, for all intents and purposes is essentially unique, we have to look at other aluminum gold dollar die trials to get an accurate appraisal of current market value. The extensive Bob R. Simpson Collection has had several different date examples of aluminum gold dollars sold in the 2020-2022 auctions, ranging mostly in the $15,000-$25,000 range.
