详细说明: An underrated issue among late date half cents, the 1856 has a mintage that is only marginally smaller than that of the 1855 (40,230 vs. 56,500 circulation strikes). Yet the latter issue is plentiful in Red and Brown Mint State due to the discovery of several hoards; fortune was not so kind to the 1856. Of the 1,600 or so coins believed extant (per Bill Eckberg, 2019), most grade EF or better since by the late 1850s this denomination had long since fallen out of favor in commerce. While many Mint State 1856 half cents are included in that estimate, the vast majority are in the certified BN category. With plenty of warm medium orange mint color to otherwise richly toned olive-copper surfaces, the offered coin represents a significant find for astute bidders. Manley Die State 2.0.
