- 1838 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-72 Restrike, Pollock-75. Rarity-5. Proof-64 (PCGS). The obverse exhibits a draped bust of Liberty facing to the left with 13 stars around the periphery and the date 1838 below. Liberty is a wearing a diadem with a ribbon in her hair inscribed LIBERTY. On the reverse, a spread wing eagle clutches a bundle of three arrows in its right (facing) talon and an olive branch in its left (facing). The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is above and the denomination HALF DOLLAR is below. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. Medallic alignment of the dies.<br /> We believe this piece is an early restrike that probably dates to 1858, 1859 or 1860 as the centers are a bit lightly struck, but the surfaces do not display any evidence of die rust. The balance of the detail is sharp-to-full, and all areas are equally free of worrisome contact marks. A bit muted in sheen, however, with an even overlay of smoky charcoal-apricot patina.
