The 1898 Proof quarter eagle saw a mintage of 165 pieces, produced quarterly in deliveries of 30, 75, 12, and 48 pieces. Of these, there are perhaps 80-100 examples extant today. The combined PCGS and NGC Population figures are certainly inflated, thanks to resubmissions, crossovers, crack outs, etc. Sublime, pristine, gorgeous mirrors offer a stunning depth of clarity in the uber-reflective fields. Standing in stark contrast to the orange-peal textured fields are the razor sharp, thickly frosted devices. The "black and gold" cameo effect is incredible and it calls to you from across the room! The eye appeal is excellent! Only 165 Proofs were struck. PCGS 6, NGC 10, CAC 4. We believe the NGC Census data is inflated due to resubmissions. No NGC/CAC example has sold in auction. A PCGS PR67 DCAM CAC sold in August 2020 for $24,000 and a non-CAC NGC PR67* Ultra Cameo sold for $24,675 in December 2015. Today, the market for ultra high end Proof gold is very strong.
