- 1802/1 Capped Bust Right Half Eagle. BD-8. Rarity-4. MS-62 (NGC). Satiny and lustrous light yellow gold with light olive overtones in the fields. Rather well struck with some softness at the eagle's talon holding the arrows, on the higher points of Liberty's hair and on her drapery, all of the usual challenging points. However, the central details of the eagle are nicely defined. A thin obverse scratch is noted, but not terribly obvious without magnification. Nice eye appeal otherwise. A bold overdate makes this issue popular with collectors. This example is die state c/b as described by John Dannreuther, with a thin die crack through UNIT of UNITED, this apparently slightly more advanced than the Bass-Dannreuther description. Another interesting characteristic of this die not mentioned by Bass and Dannreuther are the remnants of a fairly unmistakable errant S punched in the clouds just below the second S of STATES. We do not recall seeing this mentioned in the past, though it may well be published in some auction catalog or reference. In the latest state, this reverse die forms a small CUD break over the T of UNITED, but there is no evidence of this beginning on this coin.
