- 1819/8 Matron Head Cent. N-1. Rarity-1. MS-64 RB (PCGS).
A lovely piece than ranks among the finest known for this popular die marriage of the 1819 Matron Head cent. Considerable bright orange luster remains to surfaces that are also lightly and originally toned in mottled golden-brown. The strike is razor sharp over all devices except for stars 10 to 13 on the obverse, the denticulation in that area a bit thinner than elsewhere due to a slightly off center impression. The reverse is better centered, and both sides are equally well preserved with just a few faint carbon flecks precluding an even higher numeric grade. Although N-2 displays faint remnants of an 8 underdigit in early die states, N-1 is the only undeniable overdate variety of this issue. A loupe readily reveals a bold underdigit on the present example, the sharp-eyed numismatist probably able to discern this feature without magnification. This is an early die state (Noyes A/A), both dies perfect with neither rim crumbling nor flow lining. An impressive coin in all regards, and a new discovery that will likely rank high in the Condition Census.
Provenance: From the Lux Family Collection, begun as early as the 1850s.
